History

The team was founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League. They played 53 seasons in Philadelphia, winning five World Series Championships. In 1955 the team moved to Kansas City for 12 years before eventually settling in Oakland in 1986. Upon arriving in California, the team changed its name from the Athletics to the A’s. In 1987, the team went back to the name Athletics and have kept it ever since.

Titles

While in Philadelphia, the Athletics won World Series titles in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929 and 1930. After 1930 they suffered a 42-year drought in which not only did they not win a championship, but they did not even manage to win a pennant between 1932 and 1971. However, once the team got back on track in the ’70s, they became a powerhouse, winning titles in ’72, ’73, and ’74.

Their latest World Series victory came in 1989, against regional rival the San Francisco Giants. The A’s finished the regular season that year with a 99-63 record under manager Tony LaRussa. In the ALCS, the A’s defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in five games before moving on to sweep the Giants in four. Game three of the series was preceded by the Loma Prieta earthquake, which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale and was responsible for 63 deaths. The earthquake caused the game to be postponed after Candlestick Park in San Francisco suffered some damage to its upper deck.

The series resumed ten days later, and Oakland went on to dispose of the Giants 13-7 and 9-6. Pitcher Dave Steward won MVP honors, having pitched a shutout in game one and finishing with a 1.69 ERA.

Famous players

The A’s have had several memorable players pass through their dugout. RF Reggie Jackson played 21 seasons for the franchise, including time in Kansas City. Jackson helped Oakland win five consecutive AL West divisional titles and three consecutive World Series. He hit 254 home runs during his time in Oakland.

Ricky Henderson is another memorable ballplayer to suit up for the A’s. A left fielder, Henderson played four stints with the A’s. Known as one of the best leadoff hitters in MLB history, he holds the record for career stolen bases, runs unintentional walks and leadoff home runs.

Dennis Eckersley is another standout for the club. Eckersley played for the A’s from 1987 to 1995. He won the Cy Young award in 1992 and the ALCS MVP award in 1988.

Also of note is pitcher Catfish Hunter. Hunter pitched for the A’s from 1965 to 1974, winning three World Series with the A’s. He led the league in wins and ERA in 1974 and pitched a perfect game in 1968.
