Farmington is home to the Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, a thoroughbred horse racing track and racino in New York State. The venue opened in 1962 and it underwent several ownership changes, plus a roller coaster of success and near-bankruptcy incidents. Finger Lakes race track suffered economic blindsiding with the emergence of Off-Track betting in the 80s. It made a rebound 10 years later with simulcast racing, which made it possible to attend the clubhouse and still wager on other tracks around the country.

In 2004, ten million dollars in renovation later, Finger Lakes Race Track became Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track, and a whole floor for video gaming was added. This introduction to the racino concept made attendance rise and save the day.

Some famous jockeys have ridden at the facilities, including Angel Cordero and Pat Day. One of the horses that called Finger Lakes home, Tin Cup Chalice (first winner of the Big Apple Triple Crown of Racing) was killed at the track in 2009 when a colt named Zany collided with him, resulting in both their deaths.

Featured races at Finger Lakes include the New York Derby, a 1-1/16 mile race for 3-year-old, New York-bred horses. This race is part of the Big Apple Triple and carries a $150,000 purse. The Big Apple Triple consists of the Belmont Park Mike Lee Handicap, the New York Derby, and the Saratoga Race Course’s Albany Stakes.
