“The Big M” or Meadowlands Racetrack is a horse racing facility nestled in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It can host both thoroughbred and harness racing; plus, it is equipped with a race track for night racing, and sure enough, most of its races are at night.

It opened up in the mid-70s with harness racing, thoroughbred racing following in 1977. Since then, autumn has been solely set aside for thoroughbreds, with the rest of the year featuring standardbreds or harness horses.

The first leg of the Trotting Triple Crown, the Hambletonian, has taken place since 1981 at the Meadowlands Racetrack; likewise, the first leg of Harness Racing’s Pacing Triple Crown, called the Cane Pace, has also called it home since 2015. Both of these run on the same program. Another of its famous races, the Meadowlands Pace, is a harness race for three-year-olds, and it is the richest pacing race in the USA, second richest in North America.

It was revamped in 2013, one of the additions being a new grandstand, which cost $110 million and seats 2,200 in a 15,000 attendance. The Racecourse is standard in dimensions, with a one-mile dirt track, and a 7-furlong turf course within it for thoroughbreds only.

Interestingly enough, there is a lake in the middle of the track that resembles the state of New Jersey.
