Located in Oceanport, New Jersey, the Monmouth Park race track is a Grade 1 Thoroughbred racing track run under the auspices of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and is considered one of the most important venues of the American horse racing circuit. It is home to the prestigious 3-year-old Haskell Invitational and it also served as the host to the 2007 Breeders' Cup edition.
It first opened its doors back in 1870 with the support of the local Monmouth Park Association but was later purchased on 1878 by a group of investors, leading to a brief period of prosperity that lasted for nearly two decades until pari-mutuel betting was prohibited by the New Jersey's state legislature. It was then seized and resold for the purpose of settling overdue taxes, eventually being transformed into the Monmouth Fort by the US Army.
After a long interval that lasted more than 50 years, and with the support of Amory L. Haskell, among other local magnates, Monmouth Race Course finally reopened on June 19th, 1946, after the New Jersey authorities passed a bill that allowed betting on horse racing once more. By 1985, it was sold to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for 45 million dollars, while retaining its original name.
Monmouth Park features a main dirt racetrack that is one-mile long, alongside an additional 7-furlong turf course.
