Presque Isle Downs is a racino located near Erie, Pennsylvania, specifically in Summit Township. It began development in 2005 and finally opened its gates in 2007, under the supervision of developer MTR Gaming Group.
Months later, the 1-mile oval track opened up in September. This track was paved with Tapeta Footings, a synthetic mixture of rubber, sand and wax-coated fiber. It is actually the first synthetic racetrack paved with Tapeta in the US. It is also the first track that is longer than 1 mile in the northeastern United States.
Presque Isle Downs hosts many races, including Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes, Grade II, Presque Isle Mile, Tom Ridge Stakes, Satin and Lace Stakes, Karl Boyes Memorial Stakes, The HPBA Stakes, Fitz Dixon, and the JR. Memorial Juvenile Stakes. Its signature attraction is its Thoroughbred racetrack. Simulcasting became operational in 2007; also, the venue currently offers dining facilities such as LBV Steak & Pasta, The Brew Brother's, Backstretch Buffet, The INCafe, The HUB, Bar 90, and the Trackside Bar.
As a racino, it sports 1,700 slot machines. The revenue from the gaming area is split between the operator and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 45/55. The funds of the Commonwealth fund property tax relief, tourism, and the horse racing industry. Table-games revenue goes to the state’s general fund and local government.
