Nestled within the Maryland State Fair, the Timonium Racetrack is a 5/8th mile oval overlooking York Road in scenic Lutherville, Maryland. In 1878, after several attempts, a successful fair was carried out in Lutherville, but its success was short-lived because the Northern Central Railway constructed an extension right in the middle of the fairgrounds. Nevertheless, its success made its operators resolve to establish an annual fair. They incorporated as The Agricultural Society of Baltimore County and leased the plot of land known then as the "Timonium Estate."

Later, the Agricultural Society of Baltimore County fair began facing stiff competition from the State Fair, also called the Pimlico Fair, but both groups resolved to hold their fairs conjointly and then merged into a single corporation: the Maryland State Fair and Agricultural Society of Baltimore County. The joint annual fairs became one, the Maryland State Fair.

Thoroughbred racing began being held at Timonium race track in 1887, and the results of the races were forwarded by carrier pigeons to Baltimore and Virginia, to interested parties there. The fair was briefly interrupted for 3 years when it was leased to the U.S. Army as a storage depot and repair center for vehicles. It reopened in 1946.

Another crisis loomed in the horizon when, in the 70s, the Maryland Racing Industry tried to have the Fair’s Thoroughbred racing dates transferred to other Maryland tracks, but the Fair Directors saw the threat in such a move for the overall well-being of the Fair and established a committee which helped convince the public and the Legislature of the value of keeping the Thoroughbred racing as part of the Fair, thus averting the crisis.

The Timonium Race Track at the Maryland State Fair is home to Live and simulcast Thoroughbred Horseracing. It holds a brief meet of 8 days every year during the State Fair, which ends on Labor Day, and the racing events hosted here include: Alma North Handicap, Bobby Hale Stakes, Winning Colors Stakes, Taking Risk Stakes and Linkage Stakes.

The venue has a grandstand that can seat 5,000 fans, parking for 5,000 cars, and a stable area for 600 horses. The racetrack is an oval dirt track of 5/8 mile.
