Philadelphia 76ers Team History

One of the oldest clubs in the NBA, the Philadelphia 76ers were founded in 1946 and one of only eight franchises to survive in the first decade of the league. Established as the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League, the Nationals would make the postseason in their first year. In 1949, the Nationals would join six other NBL teams in merging with the Basketball Association of America to form the National Basketball Association. The franchise would move to Philadelphia in 1963 and rename itself as the Philadelphia 76ers where they have remained ever since.

Philadelphia 76ers Championships

The Philadelphia 76ers have had success in the postseason from the beginning, making it to the first NBA Finals in 1950 as the Syracuse Nationals. The Nationals would meet the Minneapolis Lakers in the Finals but would lose in six games. The Nationals would win the club’s first NBA championship in 1955 with a win over the Fort Wayne Pistons that was won in the final seconds of Game Seven. After becoming the Philadelphia 76ers, the team would win its second title in 1967 with Wilt Chamberlain leading the 76ers past the Boston Celtics in the Division Finals, marking the first time in 11 years that the Celtics were not in the Finals, and then to a 4-2 series win over the San Francisco Warriors. The team would win one more championship in 1983 with Moses Malone and Julius Erving, taking the Sixers to a four-game sweep over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sixers would return to the Finals one more time in 2001 with Allen Iverson leading Philadelphia in a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers, who would win the championship over the 76ers in five games.
